Garden Update 6/28/09 - Evidence

In spite of the excruciating heat that we have been experiencing here --- my plants are doing more than fine. I would say that they are coming along splendidly.

They are all heavy with their various fruits, surrounded by dense green foliage.

Today, I got up early enough to escape the most severe heat of the day. I potted two new "Black Cherry" tomato plants, laid down brick platforms for them, fertilized and watered everything else.

Above is the photographic evidence of the current state of my garden plants.

Glad your garden is holding up under the heat...hope it's not moving my way! We are supposed to have temps in the 80s this week with low humidity -- a good thing.

islandgardener, you had better hope that you don't get the blistering heat that we have had the last couple of weeks. It made gardening almost impossible! Luckily, we too have temps in the 80's forecasted for this week.

Wow! Alexandria, that is great, all these fruit of your labor! Tomatoes, they love heat!

Taty, you're right about the tomatoes loving the heat. I was worried though. We had heat indexes of over 112 degrees for a few days.

Wow - your toms look great! Everything I have is burning in the sun. Well, except for the okra.

Suzanne, I hope you're able to salvage some things other than just okra! Your okra will thrive in any drought. It grows like a weed in my experience.

Yay, tomatoes! Nearly all my plants have fruit too. Makes me so impatient.

For some reason, my peppers aren't fruiting yet. I thought it was maybe because some are getting shaded by the tomatoes, but the ones w/more sun aren't there either. I usually expect jalapenos to be popping by now.

Bangchik, thanks for your comments. Yes, my plants seem to be thriving with the close attention that I'm paying to them, especially the tomatoes. I guess "babying" does pay off.

AR, yea for tomatoes is right! I am totally impatient for them to ripen. That's strange about your peppers. I've had jalapenos for weeks now, and as far as the larger ones go, they do love sunlight. I have heard that if the temperatures get too hot that this will prevent fruiting. I have even had a couple of the small ones simply drop off in the heat.

Hi Alexandria, tqvm for dropping by my blog. I must say that your tomatoes look so good. I have not seen such nice crop before except at the farm at the highlands here. That lily is outstanding too. Kansas city very hot? Have a wonderful day!

Stephanie, I enjoyed your blog. I am extremely pleased with how well my tomatoes have done so far. Thank you for complimenting them. Kansas City has been terribly hot recently! We seem to be getting a momentary break from the sweltering heat at the moment though.

I love the sense of anticipation this time of year, waiting for that first ripe fruit is always exciting. Everything looks great!

Bucolic, that sense of anticipation is definitely in the air for me. I'm already thinking of a larger garden for next year!
